Botox Has the Numbers

Even though Botox Cosmetic has been in the marketplace for over 20 years at this point, Allergan Aesthetics, the creators and distributors of Botox, continues to research it on an ongoing basis.  The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology recently published one of these studies, which was entitled “Self-Perception of Natural Outcome, Appearance and Emotional Well-Being After Botox Treatment for Upper Facial Lines: Post Hoc Analysis Across Age and Gender.”

If your eyes glazed over the title of that study, you're not alone, but stay with us here.  Basically, the researchers in this study wanted to know how Botox makes people feel.

This examination had very high standards in that it was randomized, placebo controlled, and conducted over a 12-month period of time.  The scientists evaluated 3 major areas of Botox treatment: scowl lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

Each patient completed satisfaction questionnaires related to the Botox treatment itself, its psychological impact, and the perception of a natural result.  Analysis of the survey results showed that 30 days after receiving Botox, 90.5% of respondents reported being either mostly or very satisfied with the natural looking appearance of the treatment.

This level of satisfaction with the use of Botox continued for 80% of patients over the 12-month period of the study.  Additionally, more than 50% felt that they had meaningful improvement in both appearance and psychological well-being.

Why would people who received Botox feel a psychological and emotional sense of improvement in well-being?  Dr Steven Dayan, the lead author of this study, believes that by using Botox, “we are doing much more than just removing a wrinkle.”

Many other studies have confirmed and published this phenomenon, concluding that people do feel better about themselves after Botox treatments.  Facial expressions can indeed say a lot about our emotions.

This same study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology also addressed one major concern of many first-time Botox patients: that they will not look “natural”.  However, more than 90% of patients reported that their results did not look artificial, and all of the dosages used in this study were the amounts approved by the FDA for being both safe and effective.
