Horizontal forehead wrinkles are a common frustration area for people of all ages. They are produced by the contraction of the underlying muscles known as the frontalis muscles, which run from the scalp line to the eyebrows.
Most people form these lines over time simply by elevating their eyebrows. In many foreheads, the lines appear to be etched into the skin and become more deep over time.
Fortunately, relaxing the frontalis muscles with Botox can soften and smooth the forehead wrinkles. This treatment produces a more relaxed and less stressed look.
Before injecting Botox however, we here at Maine Laser Skin Care assess the forehead at rest, and with animation and movement of these muscles. The width of the forehead, the extent and depth of the wrinkles, and gender of the patient are all factors in our assessment of the amount of Botox needed and its placement by injection.
While the frontalis muscles seem very simple in their function of raising the eyebrows, they can be difficult to relax with Botox unless the injector is very experienced. Before we do any Botox injections on a new patient, we take time to assess the muscle movement, positioning of the eyebrows, and the upper eyelids.
There are also personal preferences to take into account with our assessment. Men generally require higher dosages of Botox due to them generally having stronger facial muscles than women.
Some women will frequently prefer to have some elevation of the outer part of eyebrows to enhance the arch of this area. Other women who have the natural eyebrow arch that they desire do not want more of a particular enhanced arch commonly referred to as “Spock eyes”.
