With the current state of aesthetic technologies that we have here at Maine Laser Skin Care, we can reduce the appearance of scars in several ways. Like a lot of things in medicine, the chosen treatment depends on multiple factors, including the age of the scar, the location, the color, and whether or not the scar is depressed or elevated above the skin.
Different scars with different characteristics will benefit from different treatment approaches. They sometimes may even require a combination of treatments.
Lasers are generally considered to be the first line of therapy in the management of scars. With various wavelengths of laser, we can lighten pigmented or reddened scars, stimulate collagen production under depressed scars, and smooth out hypertrophic or thickened scars.
The choice of laser is obviously depend on the characteristics listed above. It may involve using a combination of lasers.
Micro needling is another effective modality for treatment of troublesome scars, as this method can help scars re-model to thinner and less thickened versions. Radiofrequency microneedling is particularly effective for acne scars that can be depressed and diffuse.
Other techniques that can be used if needed include fillers, which can be placed under depressed scars. Fillers can lift these scars to a level with the surrounding skin so that they are on an even level.
Fillers can also be used with a cannula to undermine and smooth out an area of diffuse scars. One such example of diffuse scars are those that appear following acne outbreaks on the cheeks.
As you can see above, not all scars are created equal. Types of scars really depend on age, cause, and specific appearance.
Also, no one can ever legitimately promise to eliminate a scar completely. However, we here at Maine Laser Skin Care can assure you that we will assess your scar and develop an individualized approach that can make the scar less visible and less obvious.
