Dry Skin Season is Here

After the humidity of the summer fades, the dryness of the fall and winter returns.  Additionally, as our homes and offices tighten up and the heat comes on, the indoor humidity also drops.

For those who battle dry skin, this time of the year is when the symptoms and signs of their skin condition becomes most noticeable and bothersome.  People with chronic dry skin have a tendency to further develop facial redness, scaling and flaking diffusely, and a general feeling of uncomfortable skin tightness.

Why does this happen?  Most people with dry skin have a tendency to produce less oil or sebum than normal.

Although too much oil production in the skin can cause problems such as increased tendency to acne breakouts, oil or sebum actually helps the skin to retain moisture.  Lack of oil leads epidermal skin cells to dry out and flake off earlier than they should.  The premature loss of skin cells results in the appearance of redness, scaling, and tightness.

The most important way to deal with dry skin is to restore the skin barrier in order to prevent moisture loss.  The best home treatment is to use a moisturizer on a regular basis that contains ingredients that help hold on to moisture.

Common ingredients in the best moisturizers include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.  These chemicals tend to hold on to water within the skin and reduce loss of moisture that occurs with evaporation, especially in low humidity environments.

You can also prevent dry skin by avoiding hot baths or showers, and harsh soaps that can strip away natural moisture. For facial dry skin, a good moisturizing facial performed on a regular interval (such as once a month) can also be very helpful, particularly during the fall and winter.

The DiamondGlow facial in particular can clean accumulated dead skin cells, makeup, sunscreen and environmental toxins out from your pores.  With the baseline cleaning of the skin done, DiamondGlow can then infuse serums that can help moisturize the skin while also promoting more even distribution of moisture over the face and body.

With the fall weather now upon us, start daily moisturizers and schedule at least that first DiamondGlow facial to get ahead of the dry skin issues to come.  We have excellent and experienced aestheticians at each of our offices who can not only perform your needed treatments, but also counsel you on the best products for your skin condition and type.
