Treating Frown Lines in These Times of Stress

Since May 2020, we at Maine Laser Skin Care have returned to our Augusta and Scarborough offices full time again.  Since we reopened after it was safe to do so, we have observed a curious phenomenon.

More and more people from all walks of life are coming in for treatment of frown lines.  Also known as scowl lines, frown lines are the lines that form above the nose and between the eyes over time.

Naturally, these lines occur when a person has been frowning or scowling multiple times, and these days, you can guess as to why.  There are usually only two, but they are prominent, and their ridges go deep.

As mask wearing has become a regular fixture of our wardrobes, more people are paying a greater amount of attention to our faces from the nose up.  Consequently, many of our visitors have complained of looking stressed as the lines between their eyes have deepened.

Fortunately, we have a treatment for frown lines in the form of Botox.  First, though, a brief anatomy lesson.

We all have a combination of 3 muscles between our eyes that form an inverted triangle known as the glabellar complex.  When we frown, these muscles contract horizontally, which folds the skin between the eyes and form vertical lines that some call “the elevens”.

When we treat this area with Botox, we generally have the client contract these muscles by purposefully frowning or scowling, and then inject Botox points within that muscle complex where the contraction is the greatest.  For most people, 5 injection points does the job.

Sometimes, those injections are equally divided in terms of the amount of Botox.  We can also vary the dosage depending on the individual person’s face and muscle structure.

The ability to vary the injection sites and the Botox amounts per injection are variables that highlight the importance of the skill, experience, and the artistic eye of the injecting nurse or physician.  Our injection team here at Maine Laser Skin Care has been injecting Botox since 2003, and we are considered to be among the most experienced in Maine and New England.

If you have been feeling and looking stressed, and you want to finally soften those frown lines, call either of our offices in Scarborough at (207) 303-0125, or in Augusta at (207) 873-2158.  We can set you up with a free consultation, and see how we can help you look better through these turbulent times.
