Sunscreen FAQ: Do I Still Need My Sunscreen When It's Rainy and Cloudy?

We think that the answer to the question presented in the title of this blog is straightforward: yes, you still need to wear sunscreen.  If you are outside during the day even on cloudy days and when it’s raining, there are still ultraviolet rays emanating from beyond the clouds.

Cloud cover and even the temperature outside have no effect on the strength of UV rays.  Many people have experienced being outside on a cloudy day during the summer and still developing a sunburn for that very reason.

However, the time of day when you are exposed to the rays is the key.  Ultraviolet rays are strongest between 10 AM and 2 PM every day of the year, which is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky.

As an old dermatology professor of Dr. Burke used to say, "If you don’t need a flashlight to see when you are outdoors, you need sun protection."  Plan accordingly, and don’t forget to stock up on sunscreen with our 20% off sunscreen summer sale!
