Microneedling for Anti-Aging and Scars

Microneedling in its various forms has become increasingly popular due to its effectiveness, minimal invasiveness, and limited downtime.  However, certain precautionary measures are required to give someone who is undergoing a microneedling treatment the best results.

Microneedling can be used for skin rejuvenation.  It can also effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars, traumatic scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.

In microneedling procedures, very fine miniature needles are quickly injected into the skin in a controlled pattern.  Before the needles come in, we here at Maine Laser Skin Care use a topical numbing cream to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

After the period of numbing, the soon-to-be-treated area is cleaned with alcohol and prepped for the introduction of the microneedles.  Treating a cleaned surface with a sterile needle tip device is key to preventing infection.

After the area is clean, we use a topical product to stimulate healing and collagen production.  We use either a sterile hyaluronic acid solution or platelet rich plasma (PRP), the latter of which is drawn and derived from the patient's own blood.

When the skin is injured intentionally in a controlled manner, the multiple areas of healing micropunctures stimulate collagen growth under the skin by the release of multiple growth factors.  When collagen and elastin are produced in larger quantities, the skin becomes remodelled with tightening and smoothing effects seen.

The choice of which microneedle device to use depends on the state of underlying skin in terms of age and extent of sun damage.  Microneedles, when used in combination with radio frequency energy, can lead to more & enhanced collagen production, and overall more skin tightening and lifting of deeper scars.

The Secret RF from Cutera is the radio-frequency (or RF device) that we use here at both offices of Maine Laser Skin Care.  This device allows us to vary the depth of the needle penetration, the amount and intensity of the RF energy deployed, and the number of needles inserted into the skin.

When compared to microneedly pen devices, Secret RF is admittedly a more intense treatment with slightly more downtime in terms of redness and swelling.  However, our experience has shown that the more aggressive the treatment initially, the better a cosmetic outcome you will see at the end.

At the time of your initial consultation (which, as a reminder, is free), we will discuss in detail the pros and cons of the various choices within the spectrum of microneedling, and what to expect in terms of downtime and outcome.  We have several microneedling treatment options at each office, not to mention an abundance of experience with this exciting option for skin rejuvenation.
