Skin aging is affected by multiple factors including sun exposure, hydration, smoking, and genetics. Recent research has aimed to assess other factors that might also influence wrinkle development, such as a person's diet.
A recently published study assessed the skin of 2700 women over the age of 50. Among the factors analyzed in this study included their dietary habits.
Researchers rated the diets of the individual participants in terms of the quality of their dietary adherence to generally accepted healthy guidelines of eating fruits, vegetables, healthy grains, and lean proteins. Their diet scores were then compared to a separate independent assessment of their skin for wrinkles.
As you might expect, the women with the healthiest diet scores had the least amount and severity of facial wrinkles. This conclusion persisted even when age, sun exposure, and smoking were controlled within the study.
This study confirms other findings that the state of a person’s nutrition plays a significant role in process of skin aging and appearance. Because the healthiest diet is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids, it is probable that this diet reduces the oxidative stress on the skin which is known to be a major factor in the aging of skin over time.
Conversely, this study also concluded that diets that are heavier in processing with higher amounts of refined sugars and fats are associated with more wrinkling and at earlier ages. “You are what you eat,” as the old expression goes.
